Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Thursday he will run in the elections for the president of Romania scheduled for early November and announced he will seek his Social Democrat Party’s (PSD) support for the candidacy next week, writes Agerpres.
“I will run. I will seek the support for the candidacy on Tuesday, the 29th, as part of the PSD structure, given that I already have the official support of the Conservatives and the National Union for the Progress of Romania (the PSD governing allies — editor’s note). At the (PSD) National Council on Tuesday I will ask for my party’s support for me to run in the elections”, Ponta told Adevarul Live broadcast.
He added he joins the presidential race thinking of winning.
“Will I win or not — I don’t think there’s anybody who can know that. I join the battle with the idea of winning”, Ponta underscored.
Earlier in the week, PNL party president Klaus Ioahnnis was designated presidential candidate. With PNL and PDL heading for a merger, the final candidate for the political right and Ponta’s likely main competition will be announced on August 5.
