Italian tyremaker Pirelli plans to invest EUR 105 million in Romania through to 2017, boosting tyre production in the Slatina Industrial Hub, Olt County, which should create 500 new jobs. The company secured EUR 35 million in state aid for this project.

Pirelli wants to expand the manufacturing surface to around 200,000 square meters and increase the production capacity to around 13 million units yearly from the current 8.5 million. The company produces tyres in the Premium range at Slatina.

The company will reach a headcount of 3,500 people in the next five years.

“The fact that Pirelli decided to have in Romania, at Slatina, the larges factory worldwide, the fact that investments were made yearly, future plans were laid out every year, the fact that in Slatina, we find Pirelli’s highest technology, all show there is already a special relationship between a large company, such as Pirelli and Slatina, Romania,” said PM Ponta.

“I wish that Pirelli perceives Romania as the second country where it wants to invest after Italy,” added the PM.

PM Ponta said the state aid for Pirelli received an “agreement in principle” and that the money will be recovered through taxes.

The Pirelli Group has an ongoing investment plan of EUR 450 million locally, which runs through to 2014. The company said the bulk of investments went towards the set up of the Slatina Industrial Hub. It comprises of the tyre factory and a metal cord plant. The company also owns a filter unit for diesel engines in Romania.
