The owners of a .ro domain will pay an annual registration tax and a renewal tax, according to a draft law.

The value of the taxes will be set via the order of the minister for Information Society, at the proposal of the Romanian Top Level Domain, from the National Institute of Research & Development in Informatics, which administers approximately 700,000 web pages in Romania, according to Mediafax newswire.

“The date at which the tax is due for the newly registered domains is the date the order is published in the Official Gazette. In the case of the already existent domains, the owners have the obligation to renew them in at most 3 months from the date it is published in the Official Gazette. For the domains registered over the past 24 months, the renewal is made when the right to use the name equals 24 months, according to a draft regarding the registration of the .ro domains published by the Ministry for Information Society.

At the moment, the cost of a .ro domain is USD 51.26, plus VAT, according to data available on the Romanian Top Level Domain.

According to the draft, with the introduction of the annual tax, the Romanian Top Level Domain will benefit from updated information regarding active domains, the domains which are used and those which are not used and will be able to unblock the acquired and unused domains.
