Norica Nicolai will be the vice president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group in the European Parliament after Liberals elected her on Tuesday upon a proposal by ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt.

Nicolai took the individual decision of staying with ALDE after her re-election in May on the ticket of the National Liberal Party of Romania, although her party decided to shift to the group of the European People’s Party, informs Agerpres newswire.

Nicolai will also represent ALDE as an alternate member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, and will carry on her foreign affairs activity in the delegations for the relations with the Republic of Moldova and Russia as well as contribute to drafting the group’s European policies.

“I thank my fellow MEPs for continuing to believe in Romania, in the country’s representatives in the European legislative body, and for trusting me. As I have already said, ALDE is the group that on most occasions decides the direction of European policies, and the fact that I shall supervise and contribute to their drafting within this political group is my guarantee to Romanians that they will be honestly represented in Europe, at least as far as I am concerned,” Nicolai declared at the end of the group’s meeting, cited by Agerpres.
