No new players in the telecom battle

All the five applications submitted as part of the telecom tender that will take place this fall have been validated by the authorities.

 Thus, the operators that will place their bids in order to gain access to spectrum in the frequencies 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz are 2K Telecom, Cosmote Romanian Mobile Telecommunications, Orange Romania, RCS & RDS and Vodafone Romania, as announced by the national telecom regulating authority.

Even though Romanian authorities have repeatedly stated that the tender will be open for new players since this would have a positive effect by increasing competition, no new players have submitted their application.

The licenses will be granted for a 15 year framework (valid until April 2029) and 1 year and 3 months (valid until April 2014).

The bidding will begin on September 10, 2012 and will take place in several rounds. The telecom authority estimated the final results will be announced in October.
