Debt collector KRUK International has closed around 17,500 payment settlements in the first semester, while the average monthly negotiated installment has fallen by 15.3 percent to RON 271 (EUR 60), said on Wednesday company officials.

The largest share of settlements – close to 7,000- was signed in the Transilvania region. The fewest were registered in Oltenia and Dobrogea.

“We expect this year’s number of settlements to exceed that of last year,” said Isabela Iacob, general director of KRUK International. “Once we kicked off the educational campaign, the number of settlements has tripled.” The number of settlements soared from 11,700 in 2010 to 37,000 in 2011.

Kruk International, which is the Romania subsidiary of Polish KRUK Group, launched last year the educational campaign Datoria Mea (My Debt). The company set up a website and teamed up with two NGOs for a financial education program in high schools.

The company wants to raise awareness on debt payment and enacted in Romania last year the Day without Debt on November 17. It was first celebrated in Poland three years ago and the Czech Republic is set to join this year.

One in ten indebted Romanians would give up his car

Paying bank installments ranks first for half of the 5,681 respondents included in the online survey carried out in November by iVox for KRUK International. Making rent or mortgage payments came second, followed by utility and phone bills.

More than a quarter of the surveyed are grappling with the consumer loans they have to repay. Mortgage installments were mentioned by 22 percent, while utilities and phone bills by 18 percent.

“The fact that most respondents, should they run into debt, would expect from the receivables management company to allow them the repayment of their debt in affordable installments shows that our approach to our debtors is the right one,” said Iacob.

Giving up personal expenditure for gifts or vacations is an option for 33.5 percent of respondents. One in five Romanians would give up tobacco products or alcohol, but only one in ten would give up his car.

More than half of the surveyed want to find new income sources or switch to a higher paying job next year shows the survey. Over a quarter would like to plan their revenue and expenses better.
