Consisting of Elena Moroșanu (voice), Ionuț Bîcă (piano), Michael Acker (electric bass) and Vlad Popescu (drums), the group Three for Helen represents a jazz project, initiated in order to make heart music be representative for as many people as possible. The style adopted by the artists of the group combines some musical genders that are more accessible to a large number of people such as soft jazz, R&B and pop rhythms. Thus, their music becomes a rich pallet of colours and harmonic textures.

Founded in 2012, the young group aimed at a very well defined result: to create their own personal style. Influenced by pop and rap culture, their compositions represent who they are.  Moreover, the four artists reached the performance of creating a sound print within such a short time.

The multitude of inflexions and the dynamism of the music created by this young group are difficult to be labelled as belonging to certain style. Besides, their music represents a vocal challenge, able to surprise by its new ring melange.

Invited to show their talent and originality to the public in Bucharest, the members of Three for Helen group will create a special atmosphere on the scene of the international festival ArCuB Live Open Air – Jazz, Blues & More, enchanting the audience with the novelty of their interpretation and with the spectacular fusion of such different musical styles.

Aleea Cosmonauților is an initiative designed and implemented by the jazz musician  Mircea Tiberian. The artist comes up with a combination of some music styles that seem to be very different one from each other: the Romanian pop music of the ’60s ‘70s and the interwar Berlin cabaret music.

The songs he selected may be considered hits,  many of them being awarded during the pop music festivals of the time: Două rândunici (Two Swallows), Lalele (Tulips), Să nu ne despărțim (Let’s Not Break Apart), Inima nu fi de piatră (Heart, Please Don’t Be Cold), În apa mării (In the Sea) and the list goes on The American double bass player, Chris Dahlgren will perform together with Mircea Tiberian. He will show his impressive and expressive palette of songs that covers different musical style areas, from Ellington to Frank Zappa.

Christian Lillinger completes the trio. Although very young, he has already cooperated with Dave Liebman, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Joachim Kuhn, Gebhard Ullmann and further more. Nadia Trohin an artist with a spectacular evolution on the Romanian jazz scene is also invited to perform in the show. Few years ago, Mircea Tiberian and Nadia Trohin succeeded in launching an album dedicated to the Romanian interwar music: La margine de București (The Outskirts of Bucharest). The title Aleea Cosmonauților (The Cosmonauts Alley) refers to the time when, officially, people in Eastern Europe were „flying to communism“ while, off the records, they were striving to give their lives an appearance of normality.

Sunday, July 7

11.00– 12.00 Jazz for Kids

Jazz for Kids is a musical project created by JAZZ.RO. It will be presented to the audience for the first time, in the 2nd edition of the ArCuB Live Open Air – Jazz, Blues & More festival.

This pilot project offers both parents and children the opportunity of an interactive playful encountering with jazz, in an atmosphere full of rhythm and musical improvisations. Founded in 2011, JAZZ.RO is a cultural association which aims at discovering and promoting the European jazz all over Romania and the Romanian jazz all over Europe. At the same time, JAZZ.RO is a platform for the Romanian jazz community which intends to promote young artists at the opening of different concerts. The Jazz for Kids project was launched in 2013, on the Children’s Day, through a creation concert of the jazz composer and pianist Mircea Tiberian.

It started from the idea that the very young generation can and should come close to the musical art, improvised music, and especially to jazz. Mircea Tiberian Band challenges his audience to interact with him through ingenious dialogues with the instruments. Music, harmony and rhythm will be changed into fairytales, characters or riddles. This way, the rich language of jazz will be translated to children.

19.00– 20.00 Medeski & Martin & Wood (USA)

John Medeski – keyboards and piano

Billy Martin – drums and percussion

Chris Wood – double bass and bass guitar

Whenever he speaks about his band, John Medeski describes its members as artists with  an impressive opening and a special music sensitivity, which explains the firm attitude and the spirit of adventure that Medeski Martin & Wood has had during the last two decades, since the group was created in New York. So far, the trio, including John Medeski (keyboard and piano), Billy Martin (drums and percussion) and Chris Wood (double bass and guitar bass), has promoted a special style, strongly influenced by the new musical trends – from funk to hiphop. Valued for his unconventional style, sometimes he is described as „avantgroove“ artist.

Medeski Martin & Wood’s live performances are well-known for their exploring nature. Their concerts usually include extensive improvisations, spiced with arhythms and tones games, which imprints their style with originality. „From a musical point of view, we are ceaselessly changing“, says Billy Martin, when speaking about the moments he creates on stage together with his colleagues. „Sometimes we look at each other wondering: God, how on earth did we come up with the same idea at the same time?“ explains the musician, underlining the spontaneity they enjoy when randomly choosing the musical directions during their concerts.

20.00– 21.00 James Carter Organ Trio (USA)

James Carter – saxophones

Gerard Gibbs – Hammond B3

Leonard King – percussion

The first album of James Carter, JC on the Set, launched in Japan, in 1992 and, only a year later, in New York, was received with an enthusiasm that only Wynton Marsalis enjoyed before him. Critics unanimously evaluated him as one of the most original instrumentalists, the only artist able to impose his own style through unique formulas of interpreting any jazz style.

Rightfully considered a genius of music, during the two decades of his career, James Carter started to play saxophone when he was 11. Subsequently, he has built and consolidated a reputation of a visionary artist, of a musician for whom composition is a continuous adventure and a permanent exploration of music resources. Dedicated to clarinet, as well as to flute and saxophone, James Carter has ambitiously imposed his name on the jazz empire in New York, being known as an ingenious „tamer” of melodic lines. His live concerts prove a unique glimmer, while his talent – especially during the moments of improvisation – is often associated to a „sounds fireworks”. All these will be seen on the stage in Bucharest, where James Carter Organ Trio will create a special moment, at the ending of the international festival ArCuB Live Open Air – Jazz, Blues & More.
