Former Economy minister and former Bucharest mayor Adriean Videanu was detained by the Romanian Anti-corruption Direction (DNA) prosecutors, being charged with complicity to abuse in office, according to Agerpres newswire.

The prosecutors discovered that the former head of The Directorate For Investigating Organized Crime And Terrorism (DIICOT), Alina Bica, last year lifted a restraint order set on Videanu’s shares in a company.

At that time,  Videanu was under inquiry in a DIICOT case over a prejudice of USD 11 million, being accused of jeopardizing the national natural gas system.

The fact that Bica illegally lifted the restraint helped Videanu protect the shares placed under restraint order and obtain undue benefits.

Videanu is investigated in this case together with another former Economy minister, Varujan Vosganian, being both charged after they decided to offer low-price natural gas in favor of a major company, Interagro, owned by influential businessman Ioan Niculae.

Videanu was General Mayor of Bucharest between 2005 and 2008 and Minister of Economy, Commerce and the Business Environment between 2008-2010.
