US car maker Ford stopped on Friday production at its plant in Craiova for one week, citing poor sales in Europe, reports Agerpres newswire.

A company spokesperson said production may go through further temporary stops in the coming months, if the sales don’t pick up.

“In reaction to the precarious state of the European market, Ford Romania continues to adjust volumes at its plant in Craiova and plans to stop car production for 13 days in October. If the car market continues to fall, we might have similar stops in November and/or December,” said Ana Maria Timis, Ford Romania spokesperson.

Ford plans to maintain the current level of production in the engine division. At present, there are 1,000 employees manufacturing over 1,000 engines daily.

The spokesperson added that Ford is able to adjust its output depending on the market conditions. The company makes locally the B-MAX mini-van, which is the best sold car in its segment in Europe, according to Timis.

Ford and Dacia, owned by France’s Renault, have car manufacturing plants in Romania.
