Romania will receive some EUR 50 million through the Operational Programme- Fisheries (OPF)  over the following days after the European Commission (EC) has unblocked payments for this program, Daniel Constantin, the Romanian minister for agriculture and rural development said today.

Romania’s OPF was blocked in January 2012 by the EC following “serious shortcomings of the program’s management and control system” said Constantin.

Some EUR 307 million were available for Romania through this program but only EUR 14 million were absorbed by January 12, 2012. Another EUR 50 million were paid to Romanian farmers since then from the state budget and now the funds will be recovered from the EU.

Constantin blamed the former PDL government for shortcomings in the way the program was managed which caused the loss of EUR 22 million last year. Another EUR 10 million could be lost in 2013.

The minister added that Romania could still absorb all of the remaining money through this program by the end of 2013.
