Teodor Viorel Meleșcanu resigned from his position as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Romania (SIE) to run in the upcoming presidential elections. The announcement was made on Monday by Calin Popescu Tariceanu, chief of Senate, the institution where Melescanu handed in his resignation.

Four days later, Melescanu admitted he might run for president “if all the conditions were met”. Tariceanu said on Monday that the former diplomat will make the official announcement on Tuesday, the last day for submitting candidats for the presidential election in November.

Reserve colonel Mircea Dogaru, in charge of raising signatures to validate Melescanu’s candidacy, said that he will probably run as an independent, writes gandul.info.

Teodor Melescanu is a professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Bucharest.
