CFR Marfa will start layoff of over 2,000 employees next week

CFR Marfa will start letting go employees in a layoff process that will affect 2,000 jobs next week, the minister of Transport, Dan Sova, announced on Thursday. It is a necessary measure, otherwise the company will not have any money for salaries in august, the official argued.

“The layoff number was established in November at 2,500. The layoffs should have started in February. They didn’t (…). Unfortunately, without letting these people go we won’t have any money left for salaries. It is a big problem and we need to solve it quickly”< Dan Sova explained.

The number of employees about to be fired will be smaller than 2,500 given that 200 retired in the meanwhile and the people who will forego their jobs will receive severance packages. The minister also said his institution tried to come up with other solutions for the problem such as firing people in two stages or letting go less employees, but after IMF discussions it was clear that there could be no compromise.

“Today we have to carry out what was established in November”, Sova said.
