Car registrations in Romania down 42 percent to 5,044 units in August

The Romanian car market was the second worst performer in the EU, falling by 42.3 percent last month, just ahead of Greece, where registrations plummeted by 46.7 percent, according to the European Manufacturer’s Association (ACEA).

There were 5,044 passenger cars registered in Romania in August from 8,747 units in the same month of last year. Meanwhile, EU registrations lost 8.9 percent to 688,168 cars.

The Romanian car market fell by 9.4 percent in the first eight months to 44,392 units. The EU market lost 7.1 percent to 8.2 million against the same period of last year.

Land Rover and Honda were the leading gainers last month, along with the Romanian manufactured Dacia, which added 15.9 percent in registrations to 18, 561 units. However, Dacia registered in the first eight months a decrease of 1.3 percent to 163, 617 units.

Car registrations in Italy, France and Germany fell by 20.2 percent, 11.4 percent and 4.7 percent. Meanwhile, the Spanish market added 3.4 percent, while the British remained stable in August.

The UK was the only market that remained in the green in the first eight months, gaining 3.3 percent. Germany was down 0.6 percent. The car markets in Italy, France and Spain fell by 19.9 percent, 13.4 percent and 8.5 percent.

ACEA evaluates car sales in 28 European states, out of which 25 are EU members (except Cyprus and Malta) and 3 are EFTA states (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland).
