Bulgarian president Rosen Plevneliev said on Friday, in a joint press conference with Romanian president Klaus Iohannis, about “a new vertical corridor, for gas, which to unify Romania and Bulgaria”, that “not all roads lead to Brussels and not all the gas pipes must be West-East”.

Plevneliev added that the Bulgarian-Romanian gas network interconnection, which is part of the North-South corridor, represents a priority and this project will be completed as soon as possible.

“We share the common view that not all roads must lead to Brussels and not all gas pipes, electrical circuits, railways must be East-West and must be and can be also North-South. We have an ambitious program, we want to link the Mediterranean ports to the Baltic ones, I’m referring to the transport corridors that will pass through Romania and Bulgaria. Also, we want to do this in terms of gas and electricity infrastructure,” said Rosen Plevneliev, at the Cotroceni Palace, according to Agerpres.

He said that Bulgaria is in an advanced phase regarding the negotiations with Azerbaijani consortium TANAP (Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline), noting that in a few weeks Azerbaijan will be prepared to invest and to expand gas infrastructure in the region. The Bulgarian president explained that the North-South gas corridor will provide with gas states such as Bulgaria, Greece, Poland and Romania and it will have sufficient capacity to get gas from Azerbaijan or from Qatar.

Plevneliev added that he expects this interconnection network, to be financed through funds by 50-70 percent coming from the European Commission and the difference from BERD, to become functional in 2018.
