The Romanian capital’s subway network underwent a transformation this week with all its stations being renamed after famous Romanian athletes. The “honorary” names were added as part of part of an awareness campaign to celebrate 100 years since the creation of the Roomanian Olympic Committee.

“Through this beautiful partnership, the subway space can become a space of friendship, of positive examples of the highest success an athlete can achieve. And, who knows, maybe some day a child that is a frequen subway traveller can shine at future Olympic games and Romania’s flag will once again wave on the highest level, filling our hearts with pride”, reads the Metrorex press release.

The Unirii 1 Square metro station will also be named Ivan Patzaichin after the famous Romanian rower, and the Unirii 2 Square station will be named after famous Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci.
