The Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry, its president (Sorin Dimitriu), his counselor (Gabriela Dumitriu), the general director (Gabriel Dan Mihut) and the economic director  were indicted on Wednesday for accessing European funds through fraudulent means and abuse of service.

DNA prosecutors charged the institution and its leaders with using and presenting false testimonies and documents in order to access European funds, with severe consequences. The case investigates acts committed between 2010 and 2012, during which time CCIB ran several POS DRU projects with European Social Fund financing.

Furthermore, DNA is accusing the CCIB management of implicating 48 out of 58 employees in activities that were part of European funded projects and determined them to sign “sponsorship” contracts, where they gave CCIB 30 to 70 percent of their earnings.

“Every employee involved in the project was required to sign a sponsorship contract every month where 30 to 70 percent of their income, including income that arrived to them from European funds, were transferred, under the title of sponsorship, to the CCIB”, the prosecutors argued.

Moreover, the employees that refused to take part in the “sponsorship” scheme were threatened with being fired.

“Three employees directly solicited Dumitriu Gabriela, Dimitriu Sorin Petre and Mihut Gabriel Dan to be paid the corresponding amount to the work submitted, without any cuts for sponsorship. Initially, the three found their scheduled reduced for European projects, and eventually they were let go. Dumitriu Sorin-Petre and Mihut Dan Gabriel made the necessary step to terminat their contracts in an abusive manner”, the prosecutors say.

The case will be tried by the Bucharest tribunal.
