Representatives of energy and energy-intensive companies from Central Europe participated at the 29+1 Summit held last Friday in Bucharest, which debated the impact of Europe’s 2030 climate and energy goals for the industrial sector.

The event was attended by thee minister delegate for energy of Romania Razvan Nicolescu, European commissioner for energy Günther Oettinger, and chairman of Central Europe Energy Partners (CEEP) Paweł Olechnowicz.

The energy sector in Central Europe requires investments around EUR 400 billion by 2020.

“There is strong confidence in the EU’s ability to find solutions in the budget and that financial institutions will favorably consider the provision of additional funding,” said Olechnowicz in a statement.

The association further noted that the elimination of fossil fuels from EU’s energy mix is “neither economical nor justified from the energy security perspective”, as these are assets that support the competitiveness of the EU.

“Environmental and Energy Aid Guidelines must allow Member States to exempt energy-intensive industries from national decarbonisation surcharges – such as taxes, levies, grid levies, and other costs relating to the support of low carbon generation,” said CEEP’s chairman.

“The exemptions would play an essential role in maintaining the competitiveness of European industry on a global scale and preventing broader domestic price hikes in goods and services due to eventual “ripple effects”, given the strong intertwinement of energy-intensive industries with other sectors of the economy,” he added.

According to the CEEP, the average carbon emission per capita in the EU amount to 7.5 tonnes, while in other countries, including the US, it exceeds 17 tonnes.
