More than half of Romanian employees say they are not paid enough for their work, according to a recent survey carried out by employment website BestJobs. The study shows that there is a strong discrepancy on the Romanian labor market between the salaries paid by employers and the expectations of local employees, say BestJobs representatives.

The survey reveals that 55 percent of respondents said they are not paid enough, 21 percent said they had to accept a lower salary because they needed a job and couldn’t afford to wait for a better paid position, 11 percent said they weren’t capable to negotiate a higher salary when they got the job and only 13 percent said they were satisfied with their salary.

Asked about the salary level they are expecting, 36 percent of respondents said they should receive between RON 2,500 and RON 3.500 (EUR 561 – EUR 786) and another 35 percent said they want between RON 1,500 and RON 2,500 (EUR 337 – EUR 561). Only 10 percent said they deserve a monthly salary of about RON 1,000 (EUR 224) while at the other end of the spectrum, 20 percent of respondents said they wouldn’t consider a job offer if it is below RON 3,500 (EUR 786).

Th e survey shows there is a considerable gap between expectations and the reality. Some 41 percent of respondents said they salary is around RON 1,000 (EUR 224) although they feel they would deserve between RON 2,500 and RON 3.500 (EUR 561 – EUR 786). Another 33 percent of respondents said their monthly salary is between RON 1,500 and RON 2,500 (EUR 337 – EUR 561) and only 12 percent said they earn more than below RON 3,500 (EUR 786).

The average net monthly salary was RON 1,606 (EUR 361) this June, according to official data.

47 percent of the BestJobs respondents have a college degree, 25 percent are looking for a job in IT/engineering, 20 percent are looking to work in the financial sector and 25 percent are just looking for a job regardless of the field of activity.

The BestJobs survey was carried out between August 7 and 21 on a panel of 600 respondents.
