Annual inflation rate up 1.2 pct, consumer prices increase by 0.5 pct in May

Consumer prices rose by 0.5 percent in May as compared to April, while the annual inflation rate increased from 0.8 percent to 1.2 percent, amid rising food price by 1.2 percent and non-food price by 0,8 percent and amid further increases in tariffs for services by 2.1 percent, according to the National Statistics Institute.

“Consumer prices, measured by the consumption price index (IPC), were higher on average by 0.5 percent in May compared to April 2015. Determined by the harmonised index of consumption prices (IAPC), the increase was 0.6 percent,” reads a INS press release.

Food prices increased in May by almost 1 percent and non-food goods and services had increased costs by 0.3 percent each.

The largest increases compared to April were recorded at potatoes and fresh fruit, up 13 percent for each category, fruits and canned fruits – 6.94 percent, and vegetables and tinned vegetables – 5.14 percent. Eggs’ price decreased by 4 percent and beans and other legumes by nearly 2.74 percent.

As for non-foodstuff, fuel prices had the highest increase, by 1.25 percent, followed by footwear, cars and car parts, electricity, gas and heating, each category with a rise of 0.3 percent.

For services, tariffs grew mostly for air transport and telephony, each by 0.66 percent.
