Romania’s national fiscal agency (ANAF) has no official information on foreign bank accounts of wealthy Romanians, but is interested in obtaining them, if they are available to the tax agencies in other states, said on Wednesday Eugen Serban, head of the Fiscal Inspection Directorate.

“With regard to foreign bank accounts, ANAF is not in possession of such information by official means, but if there is such information available we will start in an official procedure to obtain them. However, we may be interested if a person has a large amount of money in the accounts, as this amount was certainly not obtained all of the sudden if the person has the profile to fit in our history of risk or of strategic programs,” said Serban at a PwC Romania press conference, according to Mediafax.

He noted that, to the extent that this information is available to other fiscal agencies, Romanian authorities will take steps in order to obtain such data.

“From our point of view, we are interested and we would like to know such information, further on there are official measures which are not necessarily depending on our direction. At ANAF and Government level, probably there are official means to obtain or request this information,” also said Serban.

His statement comes in the context of the recent scandal involving Swiss bank HSBC which is accused of having helped wealthy customers avoid taxes and conceal millions of dollars of assets, “doling out bundles of untraceable cash and advising clients on how to circumvent domestic tax authorities, according to a huge cache of leaked secret bank account files”, reports The Guardian.
