Romania is affected by institutional corruption and there are attempts on behalf of politicians to compromise the justice system. These are the conclusions of the USA State Department, which also condemns the systematic discrimination of roma, penitentiary abuses, threats directed at members of the press and anti-semit declarations.
“There are major problems regarding human rights which include inadequate treatment and harassment by policemen and jandarms of roma and convicts, including the death of one person which was in the police’s custody”, the “Human Rights Practices” report shows, which has a section on Romania in 2013.
The report was drafted by the Office for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor withing the American State Department.
“Institutional corruption remains a major problem which affects all society levels. Systematic societal discrimination against the roma affects their access to an adequate education, homes, medical services and work opportunities”, according to the report.
