Romanian self-employed people are the least satisfied in the European Union as only 19 percent of them consider themselves ‘highly satisfied’ with their current work, according to Eurostat.

There were more than 228 million employed people in the EU in 2017 and about 33 million (14 percent) of these were self-employed.

In three EU member states, more than 80 percent of self-employed people reported high satisfaction with their job: Sweden (83 percent), Malta (82 percent) and Denmark (81 percent).

For a further 21 member states the proportions were between 30 percent and 70 percent.

“Four member states had less than 30 percent of self-employed reporting high satisfaction with their job: Bulgaria (just below 30 percent), Portugal (29 percent), Cyprus (26 percent) and Romania (19 percent),” Eurostat said.

Across the EU as a whole, 48 percent of people who were self-employed in 2017 reported ‘high satisfaction’ with their current job.

The results at the individual EU Member State level reveal a wide variation around the EU average.
