Romania had 525,300 scientists and engineers last year, the eighth biggest number among the 28 European Union member states, according to Eurostat.

The number of scientists and engineers in Romania rose by almost 9,000 last year, from 516,400 in 2016.

In the EU, the biggest number of scientists and engineers are in the United Kingdom (3.18 million), Germany (3.06 million), France (1.65 million), Spain (1.33 million), Poland (1.14 million), Italy (1 million), Sweden (547,000) and Romania.

In the EU, the number of scientists and engineers aged between 25 and 64 increased by 2 percent last year when compared with 2016.

The total number of scientists and engineers in the EU is estimated to be 16.5 million, and they represent one in five (21 percent) of all workers employed in science and technology occupations in the EU.

In terms of the distribution of scientists and engineers across the EU, for most countries this is generally in line with their share of the EU population.

However, the UK and Germany together accounted for 38 percent of the scientists and engineers in the EU, which is higher than their combined share of the EU population (29 percent), Eurostat said.

In contrast, Italy and France accounted for 16 percent of the scientists and engineers in the EU, which is below their combined share of the EU population (25 percent).
