Over 2.2 million foreign tourists visited Romania in the first 9 months, spending RON 5.23 billion

The number of foreign tourists accommodated in Romania in the first 9 months was over 2.21 million and their expenses amounted to a total of RON 5.236 billion, an average of RON 2.367 per/ person, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The main reason for the stay of non-resident tourists in Romania in the first nine months of 2018 was represented by business, participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (57.3 percent of the total number of non-resident tourists), their expenses accounting for 60.8 percent of the total.

The second reason were private trips (42.7 percent of the total number of non-resident tourists), of which holiday travel was the main reason (67.6 percent). Private trips include: holiday travel, shopping, cultural and sports events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

Of the total expenditures for business, the highest share is represented by expenditures for accommodation (52.2 percent), and tourists mostly preferred accommodation with breakfast included (91.2 percent). The spending of non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars represented 17.3 percent of the totla, and shopping 12.6 percent. Of the total shopping expenses, 39.4 percent went towards food and drink, followed by purchases of gifts and souvenirs (36.8 percent).

Car rental expenses accounted for 49.2 percent of total transport costs, while the budget allocated for access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos or games rooms accounted for 39.5 percent of the total.

According to the INS, almost half of the non-residents who arrived in Romania (48.9 percent) organized their trips thorugh travel agencies, and about one third (33.8 percent) preferred to organise their holidays themselves.

The main means of transport used by non-resident tourists to arrive in Romania was the plane (79.5 percent of the total number of tourists), followed by passenger cars (11.2 percent), buses and coaches (7.7 percent), other means – train, river boats, rented cars, motorcycles, etc. (1.6 percent).

Official statistics also reveal that in the third quarter of the year, the total number of non-residents accommodated in the collective tourist accommodation facilities was 938,300, and their expenses amounted to a total of RON 2.16 billion.
