The judges who handed Social Democrats head Liviu Dragnea the three-year and a half jail sentence for corruption are Stefan Pistol, Constantin Epure and Geanina Arghir. They are the judges who also ruled in the case of Senate speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu and found him not guilty of perjury.

Stefan Pistol was among the judges who recently acquitted former PSD MP and businessman Sebastian Ghita. In the past, the magistrate acquitted Gigi Becali in three cases. Pistol also handed the case of National Liberal Party (PNL) head Ludovic Orban, and argued that the leader of the PNL should receive a suspended sentence. Pistol is also one of the judges who will rule in the case of Gabriel Oprea.

Judge Constantin Epure was also one of the judges who ruled in the case of former Romanian tourism minister Elena Udrea in the ‘Gala Bute’ case.

Judge Cristina Geanina Arghir is the magistrate who sentenced Mohammad Munaf, who was involved in the kidnapping of Romanian journalists in Baghdad while he was a magistrate at the Bucharest Court of Appeal. Arghir was part of the panel that decided, in the ‘Valiza’ case to acquit all defendants, including Gigi Becali. Also, Arghir ruled in favour the acquittal of PNL head Ludovic Orban.

Not three judges agreed to the sentence. Judge Stefan Pistol argued that Dragnea should be acquitted, sources told BR.
