Monica Oltean (Wellington) was a speaker at Business Review’s Working Romania event and talked about the ways companies in Romania are trying to create a culture of wellbeing, as well as the things they have to improve in order to truly benefit from these types of strategies.

“Companies are competing in terms of the benefits and employee wellbeing they offer. But sometimes in Romania it seems that these benefits are rather superficial, while in other countries like the US we see that everything is much more regulated and companies are required to keep their employees healthy,” Oltean said.

“In order to have good results, you must show that your employees are truly healthy and care about them, not just put out a list of benefits. You need to look at the types of employees you have, at their ages, and adapt yourself to their needs. Many companies offer the exact same benefits for all their employees and don’t ask for any feedback, then are surprised that people aren’t satisfied,” she added.

The Wellington representative also talked about the fact that companies still have to improve their approach to wellbeing, which includes designating employees to work on this specific matter.

“Wellbeing helps with recruitment because demonstrating that you have a pleasant work environment will draw people to your company. But unfortunately, companies in Romania don’t yet put enough emphasis on this wellbeing component and they have no dedicated roles to deal with these issues, which are currently more of a chore – I hope they start focusing more on this matter in the future,” she concluded.
