Romania had 58,600 physicians in 2017, one for 335 inhabitants

The Romanian healthcare system registered 58,600 physicians last year, a slightly increasing number compared to the previous year, which means a reportof one physician to 335 inhabitants, according to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics.

In 2016, the health system had 57,300 doctors, meaning that a doctor had an average of 345 inhabitants. The activity in the sanitary system – public and private – took place in more than 60,000 sanitary units. 

Last year, 15,700 out of the total number of physicians, were dental practitioners, decreasing by about 800 compared to 2016. Also, 17,800 were pharmacists, rising with about 600 over the previous year.

One fifth of the doctors, were family doctors, nearly two-thirds of them practicing in the urban area. In addition, 69,400 people formed auxiliary health care staff, up 3,100 from the previous year.

The disparities between urban and rural areas remained significant

In the rural area there were 8 times more residents of a doctor, 6 times more residents of a dentist and 4 times more residents of a pharmacist than the urban environment.

The structure of the health personnel was predominantly feminine, the share of women among doctors and dentists was over two thirds, and among the pharmacists of 90%, according to INS.

In 2017, the work in the sanitary system took place in over 60,000 sanitary units – 49,000 urban sanitary units and 11,000 sanitary units in rural areas.

The sanitary network disposed in 2017 by 576 hospitals, 823 diagnostic and treatment centers, medical centers and health centers, increasing by 19 units compared to the year 2016, 461 of specialized outpatient and ambulatory hospitals, decreasing by 8 units compared to 2016, over 41,000 medical offices compared to 40,000 cabinets in 2016.
