European Funds minister Rovana Plumb detailed the government’s plans for building three new regional hospitals, noting that each of these hospitals and would cost EUR 400 million to build and equip.

“The Health Ministry is benefitting from technical assistance from the European Investment Bank. This assistance ensures both the necessary technical documentation for building and equipping the hospitals, as well as the way in which these hospitals should be built. Technical documentation means feasibility study, technical project, execution project, design, mapping services, and costs EUR 120 million for all three hospitals,” Plumb said.

She added that the ministries have decided to phase out the projects to build the hospitals: “Considering the financial allocation out of EU funds on the current programming period for the three regional hospitals, we’ve decided to phase out the construction. We will pay the technical documentation, the entire preparation package for the hospitals from the current programming period. Considering the time it will take to prepare the construction, until around mid-2020, we are also taking into account phasing for the next programming period, which starts in 2021,” the minister added.

Public-private partnership could also be an option for financing the regional hospitals, according to the minister. “Romania’s governing programme includes eight regional hospitals and one republican hospital,” she noted.
