During a press conference announcing the Rock the City festival organized by D&D East Entertainment, German producer and manager of Romanian origins, Marcel Avram (in picture) announced that Irish band U2 will not be coming to Romania this year. Rumors had appeared at the start of the year in the local press about the band’s arrival in the country on the newly renovated national stadium, that is to be inaugurated in August.

Bon Jovi could have been another option for the stadium’s inauguration, but the main impediment against the American band’s holding a concert on Lia Manoliu is the late inauguration of the stadium and the commitment made for the first event held on the location to be a football game (Romania-Argentina is the announced match), said Avram. Avram also emphasized the fact that he and D&D East Entertainment will be the ones to bring the first artist on the stadium.

Avram brought U2 to Germany last year and he hopes that he will manage to have them hold a concert in Romania next year.

Avram also commented on Rock the City vs. Bestfest rivalry

The manager who brought Michael Jackson in Romania twice (in 1992 and 1996) also brought into attention the fact that the festival organized by Emagic, B’estfest, and Rock the City will occur simultaneously. He stated that it was not fair play of Emagic to organize the festival on the days already announced for Whitesnake and Judas Priest, before they were integrated in the Rock the City festival. However, as was remarked during the press conference, the two festivals hardly have the same target, Rock the City addressing hard rock lovers and B’estfest being more alternative music oriented.

UPDATE: Concerning Avram’s statements, Emagic officials declare that when the dates for B’estfest were set, Whitesnake and Judas Priest were not included in a festival and were singular concerts. The fair-play accusations are turned against Rock the City organizers, who set the festival in the same period as B’estfest, stated Emagic CEO Laura Coroianu.
