Judging Procedure

The True Leaders Gala is an event in which we award all companies that succeeded to stand out by meeting four objective criteria:

  • Are included in the top 500 most profitable companies for 2021
  • Have had an increase in their personnel (2021 vs 2020)
  • Have high creditworthiness (ICAP Credit Score* from A1 to B2)
  • Are leaders in their sector

The first step in the selection process is to create a top based on EBITDA, calculated according to December 2021 financial data. State-owned companies are excluded from this selection, as well as banks, insurance and non-banking financial institutions.

Out of these 500 companies, the True Leaders awarded companies will be selected.

The industries are formed based on the companies’ main activities. The industry is given by the main NACE code declared by the companies, the NACE division or group of activities. The selection between the NACE division (first two digits of the NACE code), group (first 3 digits of the NACE code) or NACE code is made based on the diversity of activities comprised within the same division.

Scored companies:

  • Have the legal form of a company (examples: S.A., S.R.L., S.C.S.)
  • Companies that do not belong to the following industries: banking, insurance and other related activities, as these companies declare their financial data differently than all other types of corporations
  • Are active companies according to the Trade Registry assigned status

* ICAP Score expresses an estimation of a company’s credit quality with respect to the probability of default and/or bankruptcy within a 12-month horizon. This estimation is based on an analysis of commercial, financial and transactional data derived from official sources of the assessed companies.

2023 Outlook │Romanian workforce market, trends, challenges, opportunities
▪ Opportunities and challenges of the current socio-economic context
• The accelerated increase of energy prices, but also in the current conflict in Ukraine context, are leaders forced to adopt an austerity plan?
• Educating the workforce: programs created by private companies for employees and students to learn new skills. Is this enough to cover the growing needs of the private sector in terms of workforce?
• What are the top employers’ foreseeable future plans?
• Legal updates, regulations & norms
• In Romania, the latest August data is showing a slight decrease in the unemployment rate to 5.1%. The EU average is at 6% but not all countries are having these low figures. In Spain and Greece unemployment is over 12% and in Italy and France it is over 7%.

A recent study carried out in USA shows that attracting and retaining talents is among the top risks identified by business leaders, in second place after cyber-attacks. However, a global rebalancing of the labor market is in sight: companies are investing in automation and becoming more selective in the recruitment process.

• Attracting and retaining skilled labour force is one of the biggest investment barriers in Romania.
• Flexibility remains a priority: companies want to increase the physical presence in the office, but they face resistance from employees
• New skills development, leadership and employer branding programs – are the primary focus for companies
• How the cost of living crisis is likely to impact employees, work patterns and business operations, the much hoped for return to normality?

    Foreign Investors Summit 2022

    ABOUT

Despite a harsh couple of years for global economies, Foreign Direct Investments in Romania are bouncing back from the low mark of 2020, the first pandemic year. After a healthy recovery in 2021, when FDIs more than doubled to EUR 7.2 billion from only EUR 3 billion in 2020, the first half of 2022 marks yet another growth. Thus, FDIs reached EUR 4.37 billion in the first six months of the current year compared with EUR 3.605 billion in the same period of last year, a 21% increase.

The growing FDIs are a solid proof that Romania still is an opportunity for foreign investors. Retail and commerce, technology and communications, energy, real estate and development or agriculture sectors are the main focus of investors. But foreign investments are not only about business in this new world we all live in. Business goes hand in hand with cultural, social, environmental or diplomatic development and is a great path in strengthening ties between countries and its peoples.

At the 9th edition of Business Review’s Foreign Investors Summit we will talk about and celebrate the countries that are home of the most foreign investors in Romania, investors we can proudly call friends. We feel that we have to offer investors of different nationalities an opportunity to openly debate and talk about the relationship of Romania and their country along with their highlights and difficulties.

The panels at FIS 2022 are dedicated to countries with the biggest and most active investors in Romania, from Italy and Germany to Israel and USA. In each panel, presented by the Ambassadors in Romania, investors from different industries will be able to present their specific priorities and challenges of doing business in Romania and talk about the many things that bring us together as people and business leaders of different nationalities. For most of these countries, their business relationship and friendship with our country are centuries old, traditional even, and today we have to strengthen them further.

Join us on October 26-27 at The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection (Doamnei St. 2, Bucharest), in the exquisite Vienna Ballroom, for the 9th edition of the Foreign Investors Summit, Business Review's landmark event dedicated to foreign direct investments, and take part, together with leading foreign investors, diplomats, consultants, legal advisors, and public officials, to one of the biggest and most prestigious events of its kind in Romania and the only two-day Summit where those who invest in our country take the center stage!

Opening Panel: Environmental & Sustainability Policies and Projects. Protecting our planet and combating climate change

From old and polluting industries to fast growing unsustainable urban communities, from old auto parks to lack of waste management, from deforestation and wildlife aggressions to fossil-based energy, Romania and SEE countries still are far behind developed European countries in environment and sustainability policies and projects. We see small initiatives, projects going forward, but we also see infringements on coal energy production, waste management or river pollution management. Now it is a good time to move forward to a better future. We can fully benefit now from the western successful models, funding opportunities from European institutions and, very important, we do have smart and willing to do people.

Panel 1: Food & Water. Water, sustainable agriculture, eco food, nature-based solution, circular bioeconomy

Water is the largest natural resource but only 3% of it is freshwater, of which just 1/3 is accessible for use in agriculture and urbanization. Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. Agriculture is by far the thirstiest consumer of water globally, accounting for 70% of water withdrawals worldwide. Presently, over 80% of wastewater is discharged without treatment. Based on populations grow and countries development, global water demand (in terms of withdrawals) is projected to increase by 55% by 2050.

Transport is accounting for around a fifth of all global CO2 emission and the way in which the people and industries will keep moving is also very important in efforts to tackle climate change.

We are extremely honored and proud to have received the “Most Important Office Lease Deal” award from Business Review, for leasing 6.500 sqm in myhive Victoria Park, surface that will host the country’s first private dermatology and surgical oncology hospital. This year has been as challenging for us as it is rewarding and we are grateful for the acknowledgment of this transaction and of its importance for the office sector. Special thanks to the amazing team of Leventer Medical Group for this partnership and for the trust that they have invested in us for the next 25 years.

We are deeply pleased and honored to have received the award for the "Most Dynamic Mixed-Use Urban Hub" for our Timpuri Noi Square project, during Business Review's Realty Forum 2022. Timpuri Noi Square is for sure the most dynamic urban pole, which provides an interactive, friendly environment with a unique identity, includes working, leisure and living functions, integrated into a mixed-use environment, modern class A office complex, retail spaces & plaza, and as we always say: the place to be in the middle of the city! We are thankful for the entire Timpuri Noi Square team, that has shown relentless effort for this dynamic real estate project!

YUNITY Park's recognition as Best Office Transformation Project honors us, at Genesis Property, and acknowledges our strategic journey towards sustainable and community-driven developments. YUNITY Park is our way of creating a business campus specifically tailored to people's lives at and beyond the office, addressing the complexity of the human nature with respect. This makes it more than just a real estate transformation project, but rather an experiential platform that will redesign how people will interact, collaborate, and socialize in the future, in a dynamic and flexible environment that is closely connected to nature.

“With every innovative real estate development focusing on urban regeneration, Bucharest comes back to life. Thank you Business Review for the great opportunity to receive the “Business Review’s Readers’ Choice Realty Awards” for One Cotroceni Park, the mixd use development designed under the Live|Work|Play holistic approach, providing to both employees and residents a large variety of integrated amenities. On the total land surface of over 5.5 hectares, the development will have around 15,000 sqm of total retail area, about 900 living apartments.”
      Beatrice Dumitrascu
CEO Residential Sales, One United Properties
We are honored to receive this prize granted by Business Review, especially given that it reflects the direction we are taking in urban development, one that is focused on a sustainable future, a future of the people. The fact that four of the most prominent architectural offices in the world, the projects of whom are admired by many of us, and which are studied by architecture students worldwide, have made designs for a new development in Iasi for the first time in a contest in Romania, is a success not only for IULIUS, but also for the real estate market, and the way the cities of tomorrow are developing. We are very happy to have achieved this in a dialogue with the entire community. And we are happy to see this endeavor receiving recognition and appreciation as a prize in Realty Forum 2022.
      Marius Perșenea
      Chief Operating Officer at IULIUS
We are deeply honored to have received the award for “Best Net-Zero Carbon Office Project” presented by Business Review during the Realty Forum 2022, especially for a subject of such great importance for us all at Skanska – the Net Zero Carbon Building certification, developed in collaboration with the Romania Green Building Council. Equilibrium 2 project obtained the preliminary certification, becoming the first in Central and Eastern Europe to attain it. We want to thank Business Review for this honor and, of course, our readers for creating such a great community, caring about sustainability and a greener future. This cannot happen as an individual effort, as a matter of fact, sustainability is the area where we can join our forces for a common goal - reduce our impact on climate change!
      Manuela Ozdemir
Project Manager for Skanska’s operations in Romania
We are very honoured to have received the Best Technology Driven Office Building award for Globalworth Square, our ambitious project, designed as a business hub focused on sustainability, innovation, cutting-edge technologies and efficiency. The development of PropTech represents a fundamental move towards broad-scale digitisation of buildings. We are happy to bring the future closer and we will continue to lead the global transformation of the real estate sector in Romania. Thank you for the recognition!

                The Deposit Return System

                • Retail & logistics’ biggest challenge of 2022: implementing the Deposit Return System
                • A challenge or an opportunity? The DRS has been described as an effective instrument towards a circular economy, but how prepared are producers, retailers, distributors, and authorities to create a functional Deposit Return System?
                • What are the rules of this new game and who makes them? Who will manage the system?
                • What are the costs of adopting the system?
                • “The system will only work if all producers are fully involved, all retailers, all distributors and - most importantly - all citizens are involved and contribute to its success.” Barna Tánczos, Minister of Environment, Water and Forests. Will everyone get on board, from producers to consumers, and from authorities to retailers & distributors?
                • The Minister’s goal in the first year is a recovery rate of 65%, followed by a target of 85-95% in the third year. How realistic are these numbers?
                • Reimbursement of the deposit, cash, credit card, vouchers, or tokens? How will it work in practice?
                • How will consumers react to the DRS and how to improve awareness towards this issue?
